myMix Review by Nolan Rossi

I believe the value of the myMix system is greater than any other personal monitor mixing system I’ve used … It’s much more than just a personal monitor mixing system.

Nolan Rossi

Most churches don’t have the luxury of a monitor engineer. When personal mixing products first entered the marketplace it was a valuable solution for houses of worship that wanted to free their front-of-house (FOH) engineer from running monitors from far away. I still spend a fair amount of time as a monitor engineer, so I’m the first to defend that role and say that personal mixing products can’t do what a monitor engineer can.

However, even though there are a growing number of personal mixing systems on the market, there is still an opportunity for an improved experience in personal mixing. Most of the personal monitor mixing products on the market offer “affordable” solutions. As a result, they don’t offer the fidelity and construction quality of what I consider a “professional” product. MyMix personal mixing products stand out because through their feature set – it’s much more than just a personal monitor mixing system – construction, and fidelity efforts they seek to be a professional solution for personal mixing.

The components of myMix are simple. The myMix personal mixer is a small mic-stand-mountable device with a high quality color LED screen, six buttons, and one backlit knob right below the screen to get you through the internal menus. Each myMix unit uses an external power supply, or can be powered by the switch via power-over-Ethernet (POE). There are two XLR inputs on the side of myMix with input gain control for each input and switchable phantom power. There are two ¼-inch balanced outputs on the back, as well as a headphone output. There is also an SD card reader on the side. (More on that later.)

To take the myMix system further, you’ll use the IEX–16l, which is a 16-channel interface capable of accepting DB–25 (“D-Sub”) line inputs as well as ADAT inputs. MADI, Dante and USB options all exist to route audio signals into the myMix network.

With over 4200 seats, Grace Church is the largest church in Minnesota and one of the largest in the Midwest. The entire A/V equipment has always met very high standards and so it is no surprise that Grace Church has been using personal monitor/mixing combined with IEM and state-of-the-art technology for many years. This summer Brian Vaughan, pastor of worship and music, was introduced to a myMix system during a local myMix academy.

For many years I was used to our in-ear- monitoring system but I always felt like I was driving in a car with one window open. Now, I thought that what he had is as good as it gets, until I heard myMix.

Brian Vaughan

Brian attended a “myMix Academy” presented by Mathias von Heydekampf, owner of myMix and after a few minutes it became clear that myMix would enhance the in-ear monitoring situation to a new level.

A personalized demo following the academy at Grace Church, confirmed the first impression with the result of 12 myMix with two IEX16 input expanders replacing their existing monitoring system.

Troy Hillstrom, technical director at Grace Church:

It was not only about making Brian and the other musicians happy, there are also a lot of pros for myMix from the technical side. Through different services and special events we have many musicians with different praise bands. The fact that myMix can handle virtually unlimited amount of audio network channels, combined with the intuitive, name based operation, allowed us to get rid of our monitoring console and the need for an engineer. I never trusted that musicians would be able to control their own mix, without the help of an engineer, myMix proved the opposite.

The settings, including the channel configuration are automatically saved in one of up to 20 profiles, so set-up and sound check with different musicians is much faster. The versatility of myMix is unmatched – the same myMix that are used upstairs in the main sanctuary are used later downstairs in the youth room.

Sometimes we use myMix directly without the need for a console, we just use the local inputs for the instruments. So on top of improving the sound quality, reducing the need for equipment and manpower, saving time for set-up and sound check, myMix also helps in other areas we never expected it because of its simplicity. We didn’t consider the multi-track recording as necessary in the first place because we already have a multi-track recording capability with our main mixing console.

Since we have it, we found out how useful it is that every musician can make and take that recording. If we have a new or replacement musician, there is no need for the entire band to rehearse: they simply take a single myMix with the SD card recording, plug in an instrument or microphone and play along with the band, even when they are all alone. So simple that even low-tech musicians can handle it! Since incorporating myMix units into our set-up, sound checks, rehearsals and performances are much easier and enjoyable. Our band and singers spend less time worrying about their in-ear mix and more time focusing on ministry and music.

First Covenant Church, Salina, KS

Hey guys,

I am the Technical Director at First Covenant Church, Salina, KS.

We have been using myMix for about a year now. 8 mixers, 34 channels on the network, 2 IEX16LA fed with 2 ADAT cards out of our Yamaha DM2000 mixer. Using one mixer for a stereo drum submix sent to the network. We also have a myMix control for administration.

We had the famous blue boxes for mixers before myMix.

I just wanted to let you know about last night’s rehearsal. I have been taking time recently to go around using a headphone splitter to plug into the musicians mixes on stage and help them out with their mixes. I tell them, “Watch me make your mix sound better without changing any volumes on your mix” I use the tone, pan and effects to give it a 3D sound. Usually they smile after afterwards and acknowledge that it is better.

The best one was our drummer. He plays in a full isolation booth. I plugged into his mixer with my headphones and all he was feeding himself was the worship leader, the leader’s guitar, some of the drum submix, and the click track. He gave me a dirty look when I started changing things and when the song was over he said…”I don’t’ have a problem with the way my mix sounds, it works fine for me”. I told him. „What if I told you it can sound good and you can hear more instruments?” He was willing to try.

I was able to use the controls to feed him what he already had plus some bass, electric guitar, the BGVs and piano. He stopped after the song was over and here is the best part–he said, “WOW! It is like I am in the room with them.. I guess I just didn’t realize it was possible for it to sound that good so I never really worked on it.”

Congratulations guys. That is the best quote of all and sums up my experience with myMix.

Next step for us, put our vocalists on wireless IEM on myMix. What is MSRP on RX2?

Thanks, Roman

Our teams have been using In-Ear Personal Monitoring systems for ten years and nothing has given us the clarity and freedom as the myMix system. With each musician choosing what they wish to have available to listen to and the crystal clear quality, there is just nothing like it.

We have a total of 12 myMix, 2 IEX16L input expander and myMix Control. One myMix is used at the FOH console. The drummer is creating an 8 mic drum sub mix and sending that to the network for all to use as their drums.

He is then using the second myMix for his own IEM. We were doing that before, but with a second sound board and splitter snake. This is so much cleaner; using two myMix units. With the drum mix on line, we are running a total of 34 inputs (2 IEX 16 plus the drum sub mix).

Willowbrook Baptist Church, Huntsville, AL

Willowbrook Baptist church replaced their existing monitoring system in their main campus with the myMix personal monitor mixer system. In September of 2011 the main campus was installed with 13 myMix units, an IEX 16L and a 12 port POE switch. myMix was the premier system for the satellite campus. The system debuted in March 2012 and features 7 myMix, the IEX 16L and a 12 port POE switch.

Both the integrator, Randy Saddler of Shelbyville Record Shop and David Freeman, Worship Leader at Willowbrook were impressed with the versatility of myMix but each had different preferences for wanting to install it. “The flexibility and features that myMix offered was one of a kind. With the majority of our musicians being pro or semi-pro–serious musicians who are paid to play music, they really liked the reverb and EQ ability of myMix plus the recording function. From a 64 channel console, the fact that you can pick your 16 channels is a wonderful thing. No musician wants 8 mics on the drums, except the drummer. He can have his 8 mics and send an aux mix of the drums to everyone else” explains Randy. Tech support for the integrating process was also an important factor for Randy.

“The support was unbelievable. I had questions about the SD card and was able to find it right on the website. I called in with a couple questions and got a personal phone call back. The folks at myMix took the time to answer my questions. That is mighty awesome!”

The user friendly interface was an important factor for David: “I liked the digital interfacing. The fact that you can save profiles was huge for us. We are a diverse church with many different services. We may have up to 5 different drummers in a week. Each musician can call up his profile and not have to mess with any other settings.”

With so many different musicians using the same system, ease of use is huge for David: “The learning curve was short. myMix is pretty straightforward even though for some of our musicians, tech stuff can be scary. It is easy to navigate and musicians of all ages and tech ability were able to quickly settle in. Navigating myMix is so simple.

At our church, we have everything from traditional hymns, to a full orchestra, to a praise band. No matter what your age or comfort with technology, you can jump in really quick and use it.

”Since installing and using myMix, David says there is a noticeable improvement in the musician’s performance: myMix has definitely improved our performance. There simply is no comparison to what we were doing before and now. After the learning curve, we quickly got settled in and enjoy what myMix offers.” As the lead vocalist, David’s favorite feature is the ability to use the effects: “I love the effects. It is not a dry mix that I am listening to but a true live experience in my ears, defined by me personally.”
